The most valuable action in conducting accidents and near miss investigation is the sharing of information to prevent recurrence of similar accidents and incidents. Most SHARP participating companies are engaged in lumber manufacturing and other forestry related services, utilizing similar types of equipment, technology and processes. Symptoms of safety issues are not usually unique to one organization. Therefore, different operations may experience the same safety issues and challenges. In an effort to improve safety, SHARP will be used as a distribution network for the sharing of information regarding near misses and accidents.
With a large, diverse and disperse group of companies participating in SHARP, there is a huge opportunity to share near miss and accident information on a large scale to learn from these situations in order to prevent similar events that lead to injuries and deaths from reoccurring. We hope this information sharing program will become broader in scope. SHARP invites other organizations involved in forestry and lumber manufacturing to submit their near miss and accident information for sharing.
To protect personal information, individual’s names need to be removed from any near miss and accident announcements sent to SHARP for distribution. If companies do not wish to be identified and want to share information on near misses and accidents, company information can also be omitted from the announcement.
The intent of and near miss and accident announcement is to be as flexible as possible in terms of how operations wish to organize and submit this information. Some key information that could be included in an Accident/Incident or Near Miss Announcement may be:
- A description of what happened (digital photos, diagrams of the scene, equipment)
- Causes
- Potential damage and possible injuries
- Actual injuries, damage or loss that occurred
- Experience Level of people involved
- Time of day
- Action/Controls implemented to prevent recurrence
- Type of equipment involved (photos of scene and equipment)
To submit a Near Miss or Accident Announcement please email the information to Conifer along with an attachment of the incident or complete the online form below with the relevant information about the accident. Once received, the information will be distributed to SHARP contacts and other organizations.
